The subgroup consists of records of the Public Relations Dept. of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) from 1959-1968. The subgroup contains records of five directors and their research assistants, James R. Wood (1960-1961), Gould Maynard (1962), Jane M. Bond (1960-1963), Edward T. Clayton (1963-1965), Jonathan Chaffee (1965), Xernona Clayton (1965), Junius Griffin (1965-1966), and Thomas Offenberger (1967-1968). The publications series includes press releases, (1958, 1960-1966) distributed by the organization and statements released by King, newsletters (1959, 1961-1966) which provide a good narrative and photographic history of the role of the SCLC in the civil rights movement, and misc. publications (1963-1967). The subgroup also contains biographies (1957-1968) of SCLC members and others involved in the civil rights movement; the subject files (1961-1968) of special projects director Carole Hoover, and records of SCLC conventions and board meetings (1959-1969).
